History of the Cuckoo Clock

It is not clear who made the first cuckoo clock. As early as 1629 there were references made to one in writings of Philipp Hainhofer who was an Augsburg nobleman. The clock belonged to a prince at the time. Then during the 1740s to 1750s cuckoo clocks started being made in the Black Forest region. Many clock making shops were manufacturing the cuckoo clocks for sale. They soon became legendary.

Characteristics

Many of the cuckoo clocks are still made of wood with a wooden cuckoo. In general cuckoo clocks have 2 different movement sets. These are mechanical movements, which are operated by weights at the bottom of the clocks. They can either have an eight-day or a one-day movement. One weight combined with a pendulum works the time function. Another weight controls the cuckoo, then if the clock has music a third weight is added for control of that. The weights fall lower as the clock runs and when the weights get so far down they have to be readjusted by pulling the chain on the other end which brings the weights back up to the top. There are no batteries to replace or wear out in these types clocks.
