Ahh, this is the dialectic.

The idea is that all conflict has some basis in the problems of society – where these come to a head, the problems are worked out in some way or another, but the new system will also contain problems – the seeds of its next conflict.

Some people follow the idea of a Hegelian dialectic – which is the theory that as ideas change, this causes changes in society.

Others, like Karl Marx, believe in the materialist dialectic – ie, the means of production change, and this causes changes in social attitudes to support the new structure – ie feudalism was replaced by capitalism, and then we as a society shifted about to accomodate.

The idea of the dialectic is that as we work out these problems in society, we will eventually come to a point where all problems are resolved – and the end of conflict as we know it – what Marx termed ‘the end of history’
